Frequently asked questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about NAPROSYN SR (Naproxen Sustained Release) by RPG LIFE SCIENCES LIMITED:

What is NAPROSYN SR used for?

NAPROSYN SR is a medicine used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation (swelling, redness, and heat) in various conditions. It is commonly prescribed for different types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It also helps manage pain and swelling associated with general muscle and bone ailments such as sprains, strains, lower back pain, acute gout, cervical spondylitis, post-operative pain, dysmenorrhea, acute migraine attacks, renal colic, tendonitis, and bursitis. While it helps control symptoms, it does not cure these underlying conditions.

How does NAPROSYN SR work?

NAPROSYN SR contains naproxen, which belongs to a class of medications called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). It works by inhibiting the production of certain chemical messengers in the body known as prostaglandins, which are responsible for causing pain and inflammation. The "SR" in NAPROSYN SR indicates that it is a sustained-release formulation, meaning the active ingredient is released slowly into the bloodstream over the day, providing prolonged relief.

What is the usual dosage for NAPROSYN SR?

The usual dose for NAPROSYN SR is one tablet once a day, as prescribed by your doctor. It is available in strengths such as 750 mg and 1000 mg. Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not chewed. Taking the tablet with or after food or milk can help reduce the possibility of an upset stomach. It's recommended to take it at about the same time each day for the best effect. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on your condition, and lower doses might be considered for elderly patients or those with kidney or liver impairment. The total daily dose of naproxen should not exceed 1000 mg.

What are the possible side effects of NAPROSYN SR?

Common side effects may include indigestion, heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, bruising, itching, rash, and ringing in the ears. More serious, but rare, side effects can include difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, swelling of the face or tongue, severe stomach pain, signs of bleeding (like vomiting blood or black sticky stools), yellowing of the skin or eyes, blurred vision, or unusual weight gain. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Is NAPROSYN SR safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

NAPROSYN SR is generally not recommended during the third trimester of pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. In the first two trimesters, it should only be used if specifically prescribed by your doctor after a careful discussion of the risks and benefits. This medication may also impair fertility and is not recommended for women who are trying to conceive. During breastfeeding, naproxen passes into breast milk, and while the effect on the baby is not fully known, it is generally considered safe if prescribed by a doctor.

Can NAPROSYN SR be taken with other medications?

NAPROSYN SR can interact with several other medications, which may alter its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. It's important to inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking. Some notable interactions include:

  • Other NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen): Increased risk of side effects.
  • Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, heparin): Increased risk of bleeding.
  • Medicines for high blood pressure: May reduce their effectiveness.
  • Lithium: May increase lithium levels in the blood.
  • Methotrexate: May enhance methotrexate toxicity.
  • Antacids, cholestyramine, sucralfate: May delay the absorption of NAPROSYN SR.
  • Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs): Increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Your doctor or pharmacist can advise you on potential interactions and any necessary adjustments to your medications.

What precautions should be taken while taking NAPROSYN SR?

Do not take NAPROSYN SR if you have a known allergy to naproxen, aspirin, or any other NSAID. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially heart disease, kidney or liver disease, stomach ulcers or bleeding disorders, high blood pressure, or asthma. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking NAPROSYN SR, as it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding and ulcers. This medicine may cause dizziness or light-headedness, so exercise caution when driving or operating machinery. It should not be used in children under 2 years of age, and its safety and effectiveness in children under 18 years for the sustained-release formulation have not been established. Long-term use may require regular monitoring of kidney and liver function. Do not take NAPROSYN SR if you have recently had or are about to undergo heart bypass surgery.

What happens if a dose of NAPROSYN SR is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. If you are unsure what to do, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How should NAPROSYN SR be stored?

Store NAPROSYN SR tablets in their original blister pack until it is time to take them. Keep them in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 30°C. Protect the medication from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Do not store the tablets in the refrigerator, bathroom, near a sink, in a car, or on window sills, as heat and dampness can degrade the medicine. Always keep NAPROSYN SR out of the reach of children.
